Building Board of Appeals

The Honolulu Building Board of Appeals hears appeals from property owners and contractors who contest decisions by the Department of Planning and Permitting related to building permits, building code interpretations, and code compliance orders. It may affirm, modify, or reverse DPP decisions and can grant variances from specific building code requirements.

Contractors, architects, and property owners navigating complex or disputed building code requirements have the right to appeal DPP decisions to this Board. Neighboring property owners with concerns about a project's code compliance can also request to participate as interested parties in relevant hearings.
