Department of Education

The Hawaii Department of Education operates the only statewide unified public school system in the United States, managing more than 250 public schools serving over 170,000 students across all islands. Hoʻonohonoho ʻia curriculum standards, manages teacher hiring and evaluation, allocates school funding, and implements federal education law requirements. The DOE is governed by the appointed Board of Education and led by a Superintendent.

Every family with a child in a Hawaii public school is directly served by the Department of Education, which determines what is taught, how schools are resourced, and what support services are available.
