What This Commission Does
The Hawaii Elections Commission administers the state's campaign spending laws, overseeing candidate and committee registration, disclosure of contributions and expenditures, and enforcement of campaign finance regulations. It investigates complaints, issues fines for violations, and publishes public databases of campaign finance activity. The commission does not administer elections themselves — that is the Office of Elections — but it regulates the money behind campaigns.
Why You Should Care
This commission enforces the rules that require politicians and PACs to disclose who funds their campaigns, giving Hawaii voters the information they need to follow the money. Anyone can file a complaint if they believe campaign finance laws have been violated.
