Board of Appeals

The Hawaii County Building Board of Appeals hears appeals from property owners and applicants who dispute decisions made by the county's Building Division regarding building permits, code interpretations, and code enforcement actions. The board also considers requests for variances from the Uniform Building Code where strict compliance would cause practical difficulty or undue hardship. Its decisions are binding subject to judicial review.

If you receive a stop-work order, a permit denial, or a code violation notice from the county Building Division and believe the decision is wrong, the Board of Appeals is your avenue for an official review. Neighbors can also participate when disputed construction projects affect their property.
