Hawaii County Council

The Hawaii County Council is the nine-member legislative body for the County of Hawaii, which encompasses the entire Big Island. The council adopts the county budget, enacts ordinances on zoning, taxation, and public services, and provides oversight of the county's executive branch departments. Members represent nine single-member districts spanning the island from Hilo to Kona, Kohala to Puna and Kaʻū.

Every Big Island resident is governed by the Hawaii County Council's decisions — from property tax rates and building codes to land-use rules that determine what gets built in your community. Council meetings are the primary public forum where residents can testify on legislation before it becomes law.
