Cultural Resources Commission

The Hawaii County Cultural Resources Commission advises the county on the identification, preservation, and management of historic sites, cultural landscapes, and significant cultural resources across the Big Island. It reviews development proposals that may affect registered or eligible historic properties and makes recommendations on preservation easements, nominations to the State Register of Historic Places, and county historic preservation policy. The commission works in coordination with the State Historic Preservation Division.

The Big Island is home to some of the most significant Native Hawaiian archaeological and cultural sites in the state, and this commission is a key voice in whether those sites are protected when development pressure arises. Residents, cultural practitioners, and historians can engage here to ensure that irreplaceable resources are considered before construction decisions are made.
