Police Commission

The Hawaii County Police Commission provides civilian oversight of the Hawaii Police Department, appointing and evaluating the chief of police, reviewing department policies, and receiving community concerns about police conduct. The commission has authority to investigate complaints against the police chief and to recommend the chief's suspension or removal. It serves as the primary civilian accountability body between the community and law enforcement on the Big Island.

Big Island residents who have experienced or witnessed police misconduct, or who want a voice in the direction and leadership of their local police department, can bring concerns directly to the commission. Its public meetings are one of the few forums where the community can formally engage with police leadership accountability.
