Hawaii Joint Underwriting Plan
What This Board Does
The Hawaii Joint Underwriting Plan (JUP) is an insurer of last resort for certain liability coverages that are not readily available in the voluntary market in Hawaii, including medical malpractice and general liability insurance for entities that cannot obtain coverage elsewhere. Participating insurers are required by law to share the risk of the plan. The JUP board sets rates and coverage terms for plan participants.
Why You Should Care
Healthcare providers and businesses that struggle to obtain liability insurance in Hawaii's private market may depend on the JUP for essential coverage. The plan's rates and availability affect the cost and sustainability of healthcare services across the state.
