Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health

Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health (HIOSH), operating within the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, is the state-run OSHA program that sets and enforces workplace safety and health standards for most employers in Hawaii. Alakaʻi ʻia workplace inspections, investigates workplace injuries and fatalities, and can issue citations and penalties for safety violations. Hawaii operates its own OSHA program under federal approval, giving the state authority to adopt standards at least as protective as federal OSHA.

Every worker in Hawaii has the right to a safe workplace, and HIOSH is the agency that enforces those protections. Workers who identify unsafe conditions at work can file confidential complaints with HIOSH to trigger an inspection.
