Historic Preservation Review Board

The Historic Preservation Review Board assists the State Historic Preservation Division in evaluating nominations to the Hawaii Register of Historic Places, reviewing the significance of proposed historic properties based on their architectural, cultural, archaeological, or historical associations. Hāʻawi aku nei ia i ka ʻōlelo aʻoaʻo e pili ana i on historic preservation tax credits and grant applications and provides a community voice in the identification and protection of historic resources. The board's nā ʻōlelo aʻoaʻo feed into the state historic preservation program.

Historic designation can protect culturally significant buildings, landscapes, and Kanaka ʻŌiwi sites from demolition or inappropriate alteration. Property owners, nā lālā kaiaulu, and preservationists can nominate properties for listing and testify at board hearings.
