What's Being Discussed
The Hawaii Department of Transportation's Medical Advisory Board (MAB) is holding a one-hour meeting on September 14, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The meeting will be held via Microsoft Teams and also in person at the Motor Vehicle Safety Office in Aiea.
The board will move into a closed (executive) session to review confidential medical information for driver's license applicants. This is allowed under Hawaii law when sensitive personal information must be kept private. A total of 40 cases from Oahu are scheduled for review. No cases from Hawaii island, Kauai, or Maui are on the agenda.
Decisions Expected
- The board will vote to enter executive session at the start of the meeting.
- During that closed session, the board will review each applicant's medical condition and make recommendations on whether to issue a Hawaii driver's license, and whether any conditions or restrictions should apply.
- The meeting is expected to adjourn immediately after the executive session ends.
Who Should Pay Attention
- Driver's license applicants whose medical fitness to drive is under review, particularly those from Oahu.
- Members of the public who wish to submit testimony on any agenda item — written testimony is due at least 24 hours before the meeting; oral testimony registration must be done at least two hours before the meeting starts.
- Anyone needing disability-related accommodations should contact Lee Nagano at (808) 692-7650 or Lee.Nagano@hawaii.gov at least 72 hours in advance.
