What's Being Discussed

The State Public Charter School Commission is holding a general business meeting on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. The meeting is open to the public in person at 1164 Bishop Street, Suite 1100, Honolulu, or via Zoom and phone. Two main topics are on the agenda:

  • Performance & Accountability Committee report: Commissioners will review what was discussed at the committee's September 10, 2026 meeting.
  • Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo admissions policy: The Commission will consider a request to change how this charter school admits students.
  • Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School location change: The Commission will consider updating the school's official contract to reflect a move. The school would remove its site at 18-1359 Volcano Road, Mountain View and add a new location at 999 Ululani Street, Hilo.

Decisions Expected

  • A vote on whether to approve changes to Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo's admissions policy.
  • A vote on whether to officially update Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School's contract to recognize its new physical location in Hilo.

Who Should Pay Attention

  • Families and students currently enrolled in or applying to Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo or Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School
  • Residents of the Mountain View and Hilo communities on Hawaiʻi Island
  • Anyone interested in Hawaii's public charter school oversight and policy

Public testimony is welcome. Each speaker gets two minutes. Written testimony can be submitted to commission.mail@spcsc.hawaii.gov.
