What's Being Discussed
The Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling and Reuse Working Group, organized by the Hawaiʻi State Energy Office, is holding a public meeting on November 6, 2026 from 9:00–11:00 AM. Attendees can join in person in Honolulu or via Zoom.
The group will review a draft report on electric vehicle (EV) battery management required under state law (Act 209, 2025). Topics in the draft report include:
- Whether used EV batteries can be reused, repurposed as energy storage, or recycled — in that order of preference
- Best practices for handling EV batteries at the end of their life
- Comparing the cost, safety, and environmental impact of recycling batteries in Hawaiʻi versus sending them out of state or out of the country
- Whether an in-state EV battery recycling program is practical and enforceable
The group will also review public comments received after its October 23 meeting on two subgroup findings:
- Subgroup 1: A draft policy that would hold EV battery manufacturers responsible for end-of-life battery management
- Subgroup 2: An informational bulletin and training resources for handling old EV batteries
Decisions Expected
No final votes are listed, but the group is expected to refine and finalize its draft report and consider public feedback on the two subgroup policy proposals.
Who Should Pay Attention
- Electric vehicle owners in Hawaiʻi
- Auto dealers, manufacturers, and recyclers who handle EV batteries
- Residents concerned about environmental and waste management issues
- Anyone interested in clean energy and sustainability policy in Hawaiʻi
