What's Being Discussed
The Maui County Council's Housing and Land Use Committee will meet on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. to discuss two related resolutions about properties currently zoned as apartment districts that are being used for short-term vacation rentals or operate similarly to hotels.

Resolution 26-110 would send a proposal to the Maui Planning Commission to officially rezone certain timeshare, leasehold, and small vacation rental properties in Māʻalaea, Kīhei, Lahaina, and Kāʻanapali from apartment zoning to hotel zoning, and update the Kīhei-Makena and West Maui Community Plans to match.
Resolution 26-111 would do the same for properties that are already operating like full hotels, including complexes in Wailea, Lahaina, and Kāʻanapali such as Wailea Ekahi, Papakea, and Maui Eldorado.

Both resolutions aim to bring these properties' official zoning in line with how they are actually being used, allowing them to continue operating as short-term or vacation rentals legally.
