What's Being Discussed

The Maui County Council's Housing and Land Use Committee is reconvening to consider three related bills that would change the official land classifications for a 6.097-acre parcel in Hāmākualoa (Ha'ikū area) to allow for a new Ha'ikū Fire Station. Currently, the land is classified for agricultural use. The three bills would each make a different type of required change:

• Bill 89 (2026): Changes the state land use classification from Agricultural to Rural.
• Bill 90 (2026): Updates the Pā'ia-Ha'ikū Community Plan designation from Agriculture to Public/Quasi-Public.
• Bill 91 (2026): Rezones the property from Agricultural to P-1 Public/Quasi-Public, the zoning category used for government and community facilities.

All three changes are needed together to legally allow a fire station to be built on this land. The Maui Planning Department and Maui Planning Commission have already reviewed these bills and submitted recommendations.

The committee may vote to recommend all three bills for first reading by the full County Council, with or without changes. The committee could also choose to table or file the bills without moving them forward. The committee may also hold a closed executive session to consult with legal counsel on related legal matters.
