What's Being Discussed

The Maui County Council's Disaster Recovery, International Affairs, and Planning (DRIP) Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. to discuss one main item:

• The proposed South Maui Community Plan — This is a long-range planning document that would replace the older Kihei-Makena Community Plan. Community plans guide how land is used and how neighborhoods grow over time. The committee will focus specifically on Section 3: Growth Framework, which addresses how and where future development should occur in South Maui.
• Supporting materials include a draft of the full plan, a history of changes made during its development, and charts showing how its policies connect to broader Maui Island and countywide goals.

Decisions Expected

No votes or formal legislative actions will be taken at this meeting. This is a discussion session only. The committee will review and talk through the draft plan, but will not approve or reject anything at this time.

• Residents of South Maui, including Kihei and Makena, whose neighborhoods would be directly shaped by this plan
• Property owners, businesses, and developers in the South Maui region
• Anyone interested in land use, housing, or future growth in Maui County
