What's Being Discussed

The Maui County Council's Government Relations, Ethics, and Transparency (GREAT) Committee will meet on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. to discuss one item:

• A proposed legal settlement in the case of Kathleen Platt vs. the County of Maui. The lawsuit, filed in October 2025, claims the County was negligent and responsible for a premises liability incident that occurred on March 8, 2024, at Kulamalu Park in Pukalani. The Committee will review Resolution 26-147, which would authorize the County to settle this legal claim.

Note: The Committee is expected to hold at least one closed (private) session to discuss confidential legal matters related to this case, as permitted by state law.

Decisions Expected

• The Committee may vote on whether to recommend approval of the settlement (Resolution 26-147), with or without changes.
• The Committee could also choose to file the resolution without taking further action.

Who Should Pay Attention

• Maui County residents interested in how the County handles legal liability and taxpayer funds used for settlements.
• Pukalani and Upcountry Maui residents who use Kulamalu Park or are concerned about park safety and maintenance.
• Anyone interested in government transparency and accountability in how the County resolves lawsuits.
