These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern your use of the Civi.Me website and notification services. By using Civi.Me or subscribing to notifications, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

About the service

Civi.Me is a free, nonpartisan community resource that helps Hawaii residents find and follow public government meetings. The service includes:

  • A public website with meeting listings, council profiles, and civic engagement resources
  • Email notifications about upcoming meetings
  • Text message (SMS) notifications about upcoming meetings
  • One-time meeting reminders

Civi.Me is operated by Access100, a civic technology project based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Civi.Me. By subscribing to notifications, you represent that you are at least 13 years old and that you have the authority to agree to these Terms.

Notification subscriptions

Subscribing

When you subscribe to notifications, you choose which government councils to follow and how you would like to be notified (email, text message, or both). All subscriptions require double opt-in confirmation before any notifications are sent.

What we send

Notifications contain factual, informational content about government public meetings, including meeting dates, times, locations, and agendas. We do not send marketing messages, advertisements, political endorsements, or promotional content.

Text message (SMS) terms

The following terms apply specifically to text message notifications from Civi.Me:

  • Consent: By providing your phone number and selecting “Text Message” on the subscription form at Civi.Me/meetings/subscribe, you expressly consent to receive automated informational text messages from Civi.Me about government public meetings in Hawaii. Consent is not a condition of any purchase or use of the website.
  • Message content: Messages contain informational alerts about upcoming public meetings, including council name, date, time, and a link to meeting details. Messages are not marketing or promotional.
  • Message frequency: Message frequency varies based on the number of councils you follow and your chosen notification frequency (immediate, daily digest, or weekly digest). Typical volume is 1-10 messages per week.
  • Message and data rates: Message and data rates may apply. Your mobile carrier’s standard messaging rates apply to all text messages sent and received. Civi.Me does not charge any fees for the notification service.
  • Opt-out: You can opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message from Civi.Me. You will receive a single confirmation message, and no further messages will be sent. You may also unsubscribe via the website or by emailing help@Civi.Me.
  • Help: For help, reply HELP to any message, visit Civi.Me/help, or email help@Civi.Me.
  • Supported carriers: Compatible with all major US mobile carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, US Cellular, and others. Service is available to US phone numbers only.
  • No sharing: We do not sell, rent, or share your phone number or SMS opt-in information with any third parties for their marketing or promotional purposes. Your phone number is shared only with our SMS service provider (Twilio) for the sole purpose of delivering the messages you requested.

Accuracy of information

Meeting information displayed on Civi.Me is collected from official government sources including eHawaii.gov, county meeting portals, and public RSS feeds. While we make every effort to ensure accuracy, we do not guarantee that meeting dates, times, locations, or agendas are complete or error-free.

Always verify meeting details with the official government agency before attending. Civi.Me is not a government website and is not affiliated with any government agency.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use automated tools to scrape or bulk-download content from Civi.Me in a way that degrades service for other users
  • Submit false information when subscribing to notifications
  • Subscribe other people to notifications without their knowledge or consent
  • Attempt to access administrative areas or systems you are not authorized to use
  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access for violations of these Terms.

Intellectual property

The Civi.Me website code is open source and available on GitHub under an open source license. Meeting data sourced from government agencies is public information.

The Civi.Me name, logo, and original content (such as help articles and descriptions) are the property of Access100 and may not be used without permission.

Disclaimer of warranties

Civi.Me is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any meeting information.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Civi.Me and Access100 shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the service, including but not limited to missed meetings, incorrect meeting information, or undelivered notifications.

Privacy

Your use of Civi.Me is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains what information we collect, how we use it, and how you can control it.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. If you are a subscriber and the change materially affects the notification service, we will notify you by email before the change takes effect.

Your continued use of Civi.Me after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Hawaii, without regard to conflict of law principles.
