Department of Labor and Industrial Relations

The Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations enforces workplace safety standards through the Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Division, administers unemployment insurance, enforces wage and hour laws, and manages workers' compensation and disability compensation programs. It oversees the Employment Security Appeals Referees' Office and administers Hawaii's prepaid health care and temporary disability insurance laws, which are among the most generous worker protections in the nation.

DLIR's programs protect Hawaii workers from unsafe conditions, unpaid wages, and income loss during unemployment or disability. Workers who believe their rights have been violated — including wage theft or safety violations — can file complaints with the department for investigation.
