What's Being Discussed

The University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents Committee on Kuleana and Community Engagement is holding its meeting on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bachman Hall on the UH Mānoa campus. The meeting will also be accessible online via live broadcast at www.hawaii.edu/bor. The committee — made up of Regents Whittaker, Freitas, Loo, and Tochiki — will cover the following topics:

• Committee goals and priorities for the 2026–2027 academic year — setting the direction for the committee's work going forward
• The Kuleana Imperative — a presentation and update on this UH initiative, which focuses on the university's responsibilities and commitments to Hawaiʻi and its communities (kuleana is a Hawaiian word meaning responsibility or privilege)
• Community engagement — a presentation and discussion on how the university interacts with and supports surrounding communities

Decisions Expected

• The committee will vote to approve the minutes from its previous meeting on April 2, 2026
• The remaining items are listed as discussions and presentations — no formal votes on those topics are indicated at this time

• Native Hawaiian community members and advocates interested in how UH honors its kuleana
• Community organizations and partners who work with or alongside the University of Hawaiʻi
• General public who want to provide testimony — written comments can be submitted to bor.testimony@hawaii.edu, and oral testimony is limited to 3 minutes per person
