What's Being Discussed

The Maui County Council's Disaster Recovery, International Affairs, and Planning (DRIP) Committee will meet on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. to continue reviewing the South Maui Community Plan. This plan would replace the older Kihei-Makena Community Plan and guide how the South Maui region grows and develops in the future.

• The committee will focus its discussion on Section 3: Growth Framework, which outlines how and where future development and population growth should occur in South Maui.
• Other parts of the plan may also be discussed, and the committee may consider making changes to sections outside of Section 3.

Decisions Expected

This is primarily a discussion meeting. No votes or formal legislative action will be taken on the Growth Framework section (Section 3). However, the committee may consider and vote on amendments to other sections of the plan.

Who Should Pay Attention

• Residents of South Maui (Kihei, Makena, and surrounding areas) whose daily life, housing, and neighborhood character could be shaped by this plan
• Property owners, developers, and businesses in South Maui interested in future land use and zoning direction
• Environmental advocates concerned about growth, open space, and coastal resources in the region
• Anyone interested in long-term planning for Maui County's infrastructure, transportation, and community services

The public can attend in person in Wailuku, join online via Microsoft Teams, or testify by phone. Written testimony can be submitted by email to DRIP.committee@mauicounty.us. Oral testimony is limited to 3 minutes per person.
